1 Murder Room (£free)
Step 1: find a dark room. Step 2: put in headphones. Step 3: cry and whimper your way through this chilling title which sees you trying to escape the clutches of a serial killer that’s hell-bent on doing what serial killers do best. Namely, making sure that you’re the opposite of alive.

2 The Walking Dead: Season Two (£free)
Whether or not you’re a fan of the TV show is irrelevant (though it really is worth a watch). If you like zombies – or even running away from them and turning them into pulp before they recruit you – then this is about as good as it gets on a mobile device.

3 Scare Your Friends – SHOCK! (£free)
Remember those internet scare videos that had some godawful picture suddenly appear out of nowhere, producing more of an adrenaline rush than shark-infested-water bungee jumping? This app does the same thing to any unsuspecting sap that uses your phone. Disclaimer: if you use this app, you’re a complete b*****d.

4 Dark Meadow: The Pact (£free)
This stunningly presented game starts off with you waking up in a hospital, with no memory of how you get there. So far, so disturbing. Oh look, there’s an old man. And he’s warning you about a witch whose minions roam the halls, hunting down the living. What could possibly go wrong? Hint: everything.

“Hey, let’s go into this dark abandoned house and look for treasure”, said every idiot in every horror film ever. But of course in this case, you are that idiot, and off into the house you go. 6 Slender Man (£free)
If you’re not familiar with the internet phenomenon that was Slender Man, then lucky you. The premise is simple. Walk around in a spooky environment, and give your bowel movements an unexpected kickstart when you’re confronted with the Slender Man – a tall, black figure with a faceless white head, and an unwelcome habit of appearing out of nowhere because, well, screw you, that’s why. It’s fun sleeping with the light on anyway, right?

7 FxGuru: Movie FX Director (£free)
Finally, you can be in control of the scares for once. This video FX app already offers everything from earthquake and missile effects, and it’s throwing in two free Halloween ones just in time for the witching hour. At long last, you can create that epic movie of your dog fighting off hordes of skeletons, probably while licking his crotch. It’s not in the script, but he’s a bit of a diva and does what he likes.

You’re not a muscle-bound cold-blooded action hero. You’re an engineer in space, and things are going horribly, horribly wrong. At least you’ve got tools to protect you, right? Forging photos was much harder in the old days. All you need now is a simple app and a smartphone camera. Shoot some snaps, superimpose some transparent ghost girl into it, and boom – you’ve made page 11 of [insert trashy tabloid that you have no respect for here].
